The IdeaCurrent space training programs are limited in attempting to training the astronaut in dealing with failures which could be experienced in a rocket ship in real time due to limited resources and high expenses. To overcome this situation, I am building a virtual reality simulator of the experience an astronaut would face in a rocket ship. Virtual Reality will be used to build a simulation aid in the training for an astronaut. The simulation will include the events which will unfold in a rocket ship (such as malfunctions, errors etc.) and how to solve them. It will particularly focus on the system malfunction and how the astronaut can escape it. Through this simulation, the astronauts can learn to be more agile and boost their reflexes.

Why Space Simulation?
Virtual Reality plays a major role in simulation and using this technology to create a space simulation will enable me to understand about space simulations further. The field of space simulations is growing consistently and there are a lot of areas that are yet to be explored. Through this project I will
be able to further my knowledge in this domain. I have always been interested in aircraft and spaceships and I aim to work in this field in the future. Escape rooms are being built for tactical training and this concept will benefit the industries such as military and space. The astronauts will receive better training through this method. This method will also help reduce the recurring costs such as maintenance and repair costs of the equipment used.

The InspirationPrior to my research for this project, I started watching a video series by the channel Verge Science on YouTube. They focus completely on Space, gravity and Simulation and they explained in detail about the essence of Virtual Reality in astronaut training. This gave me an idea to try and explore more in the field of space and hence I started reading following similar channels. This research was furthered by referring NASA’s website and their developments in the Johnson Space Virtual Reality lab.
Escape rooms have been built to boost people’s critical thinking ability. Escape rooms in Virtual Reality have helped people overcome their fears such as fear of darkness, heights etc. The current Virtual Reality Escape Rooms are more in the side of games than serious training simulations. The combination of these two types of situations will be perfect to develop a simulation for tactical training and survival. |
Who am I?Hey I'm Karan, a final year student of SRM Institute of Science and Technology currently an Exchange Student at Teesside University, Middlesbrough. This Space Getaway simulation is my Undergraduate Capstone project. I've been interested in Flights, Space and Virtual Reality for a long time and hence I decided to develop my final year project in the same. I aim to become a game producer and develop simulations in the field of space and air force in the future.
